Editing features

Features can only be modified when the sequence is unlocked. This is done by toggling the lock button on the Sequence window.

TO ADD a feature

1. If the sequence is locked, unlock it by toggling the lock button.

2. Switch to the features table tab view.

3. Click on the Add Feature toolbar button (+).

4.Choose a keyword from the Feature Keyword drop down menu

5. Note how the Start and Stop location of the selection are already filled out for you in the Location list. Modify these if necessary.

For nucleic acid sequences, the typed numbers must refer to the plus strand, that is, the sequence as it is entered in the sequence file. This applies even if the feature actually appears on the other strand.

6. Select the radio buttons for each end of the feature as follows:

- if the end of the feature extends beyond the beginning of the plus strand, select the drop down menu option that is labeled with an arrow. (The arrow will look like > or < depending on whether or not the complementary strand check box is selected).

7. If the feature is located on the minus strand (the strand complementary to the one that is actually present in the sequence file), select the complementary strand check box. If the feature is located on the plus strand, make sure the box is not checked.

8. Mandatory qualifiers will be added in the bottom box. Add required information to these. Also add any optional qualifiers.

9. Select OK to add the new feature.
