Open

The Open command displays a dialog box that enables you to select from existing disk files and open them into a new window for editing and/or analysis. By using the Show drop-down menu in the Open dialog box, you can filter the types of files that MacVector will display.

You can also use the Open command to import sequences in TEXT files created by other sequence analysis programs, automatic sequencing machines, or word processors (the file must have been saved as 'TEXT'). Formats that are currently supported include:

Universal sequence formats.

- GenBank flat file format (including the DNASTAR, DuPont sequencer, and IBM Pustell variants of the GenBank format)

- GenPept files as distributed by NCBI

- EMBL flat file format (including PC Gene)

- SWISSPROT format

- PHYLIP format

- NEXUS format

- Pearson FASTA format

- Staden format

- GCG formats (RSF and MSF)

- ASCII 1-letter (TEXT files containing only sequence data)

- CODATA (both NBRF PIR and DNASTAR variants).

Other software packages

MacVector will import the following sequence formats used by other sequence analysis tools.

To import a TEXT file into MacVector using the Open command, first make sure that the current dialog box settings let you view TEXT files.

MacVector offers several options for opening multiple sequence files (see Opening multiple sequence files).
