Online Functional Domain Analysis (Interproscan)

Interproscan Search allows you to submit a protein sequence to a search using the InterProScan database tool. This submits a protein sequence to a search of various sequence signatures that are composed of many different protein domain databases.

InterProscan performs a functional analysis of a protein sequence by searching it against the InterPro database. This is a collection of protein domain and family models, called signatures, that try to predict the function of your protein by classifying it into a particular protein family and identify particular domains and other interesting sites in the sequence. InterPro signatures comprise profiles/motifs from many different protein domain/family databases.

Due to the fact that InterPro comprises many databases you may see that every hit shows similar, but not always the same, regions for each matched entry comprising the signature.

Clicking on the Cross next to the signature will result in the annotation of all different entries of that family. Clicking on the cross next to a particular member of a signature will result in the annotation of just that entry. You will always have to manually curate annotation after it has been added.

Entries are subdivided into Domains, Families, Repeats and Sites.

Additionally InterPro has a hierarchy of Domain and Family signatures. For example one entry might show a functionally specific subfamily that always belongs to a larger family. Or a class of domain that always belongs to a larger class of domain. These hierarchies are always shown in the results.

To search a protein sequence against InterProScan.

All InterProScan results that are annotated to a protein sequence will have the Feature Type of "PROTEIN MATCH". This is NOT a valid GenPept keyword. You will need to manually curate any added annotation to choose the appropriate GenPept KeyWord.
