Editing the general map appearance

The Graphics palette dialog box can be used to control the overall appearance of the graphic map. Any changes made directly from this dialog box are applied immediately to the map window.

- When a map window is the active window, choose Windows | Show Graphics Palette.

NOTE: This menu item is a toggle. Once set, the Graphics Palette dialog box will be displayed each time a map window is active, until you choose Windows | Hide Graphics Palette.

The Graphics Palette dialog box is displayed. The scrolling list shows a tree directory of all the map elements whose symbols can be edited. These can be expanded or contracted by clicking on the triangles to the left of the items. The items on the dialog box differ, depending on whether the sequence is displayed as a linear or circular map.

The Graphics Palette contains many different functions to modify the general appearance of the map.

~To display a region of a sequence

You can restrict the display to a certain region of the sequence, using either the mouse or the Graphics Palette dialog box:

- using the mouse, click and drag (Drag to Zoom) to select the region on the map that you want to display. If your map is linear, the selection will be fitted to the window automatically

- using the Graphics Palette, type in the sequence numbers that bracket the region in the Range Selector panel, separated by a colon (:). Alternatively, you can select a region from the features table drop-down menu at the right of the text box. When you make a selection from the Graphics Palette, your current settings for residue density and line wrap are retained.

NOTE: For results maps, the range cannot be set outside the range that was specified when the results calculation was performed. For example, if restriction enzyme cut sites were only computed between bases 1000 and 2000, the range cannot be set to show bases 1 to 4000, because result data is not available for the wider range. If the user types in range values outside the permitted limit, they will be changed to be within the limit (i.e. no less than 1000, no more than 2000 in the example just given.)
